Attorneys for Luigi Mangione, who is accused of fatally shooting UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, plan to present a psychiatric defense during his September trial.

They will argue that Mangione was experiencing an extreme emotional disturbance at the time of the killing.

During a hearing on Wednesday, Judge Gregory Carro said he plans to unseal records related to the defense. He also ordered Mangione's legal team to provide the prosecution with the name of their psychiatric expert and details of the defense by Thursday to avoid delays in the trial.

Legal experts say the mental health defense is likely the best option given the strong evidence linking Mangione to the crime.

Mangione has pleaded not guilty to state charges of murder and weapons offenses in connection with the December 2024 killing of Thompson in Midtown Manhattan. He has also pleaded not guilty to separate federal stalking charges.
