Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton says the Meta settlement is the largest privacy lawsuit payment secured by a state|N621|CC BY-SA 4.0
Meta has agreed to a $1.4 billion settlement with Texas over a privacy lawsuit alleging Facebook violated state laws by collecting and storing its users’ biometric data without their consent.
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton says it is the largest privacy settlement secured by a state. The case, filed in 2022, cites the misuse of facial recognition tech through Meta’s photo-tagging feature.
The settlement, which adds to Meta’s ongoing legal troubles, follows a $650 million agreement with Illinois in 2021 over similar issues.
The company has also faced recent fines from the EU and a $5 billion settlement with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) over the Cambridge Analytica scandal.
Meta, which denies wrongdoing, has paid over $2 billion for biometric privacy claims to date.
