T-Mobile struck an agreement on Tuesday, worth approximately $4.4 billion, to acquire “substantially all” of UScellular’s wireless operation, giving the third-largest mobile carrier more than 4 million new customers.

The deal aims to enhance UScellurlar’s services by offering lower prices and faster wireless speeds with T-Mobile’s 5G network, particularly benefiting customers in rural areas.

T-Mobile acquired Sprint in 2020.

The move follows earlier reports that Verizon is also considering purchasing parts of UScellular.

The acquisition is pending regulatory approval and is expected to close in mid-2025.
