Big movie houses, including OTT platforms, are banking big on brands and characters that are already wildly popular to lure viewers. And games, gadgets and good food are a sure bet.

Studios are betting big on nostalgia to attract audiences. From Barbie and Mario to Air and Hot Cheetos, popular brands are becoming storylines.

🎮 Games
The just-released The Super Mario Bros. Movie and upcoming releases like Barbie, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, Tetris, and Monopoly are all either based on yesteryear video games, board games or toys. HBO’s The Last of Us, based on the Playstation game by the same name, was watched by 4.7 million viewers in January across HBO Max and linear television.

📱 Gadgets
Newly-released Air—about the origin of Nike Air Jordan sneakers—and yet-to-release BlackBerry are based on innovation and tech in consumer brands.

🥫 Good food
Actress Eva Longoria’s directorial debut Flamin’ Hot, which is about the creation of Flamin’ Hot Cheetos snack, won the audience award at the South By Southwest film festival recently.

Comedian millionaire Jerry Seinfeld is directing and starring in the upcoming Unfrosted: The Pop-Tart Story.
