Weather forecasters Thursday said the country should get ready for “well-above average” storms during this hurricane season, with the NOAA predicting 2022 to be the seventh above-average hurricane season in a row.
The 2022 Atlantic Hurricane season began on June 1 and will continue through November 30.
Brace for impact
According to Colorado State University researchers, this hurricane season might bring 20 tropical storms, ten hurricanes and five major hurricanes, with a 50% chance that at least one major hurricane will hit the East and Gulf coasts.
The possibility of a storm hitting the Gulf of Mexico would affect the ongoing fuel shortage due to the Russia-Ukraine war, disrupting the production of crude oil and natural gas.
The first storm of the season, Alex
The system has a 70% chance of developing into a tropical depression in the next couple of days. If sustained winds reach 39 mph, it would be called Tropical Storm Alex and would likely affect South Florida this weekend.
Regardless of the storm’s development, the National Weather Service in Miami said, “The chances of showers and thunderstorms will increase by the end of the week and into the upcoming weekend across South Florida.”
