Russia’s military buildup across Ukraine’s border has now turned into a full-fledged war as the long-feared Russian invasion of Ukraine began in the early hours of the day, today (local time).

Explosions were reported in the capital of Kyiv and other cities around the country.

The development occurred just days after the Russian President Vladimir Putin recognized two breakaway regions in Ukraine as independent. It seems the Russian Premier has announced an attack on its neighboring country Thursday early morning (local time).

The attack came hot on the heels of Putin’s announcement of an intention to not occupy Ukraine, but to ‘demilitarize and de-nazify” the region, while calling on the Ukrainian military to lay down their arms.

Biden Warned of Added ‘Consequences’

President Joe Biden had issued a warning to Russia, stating that they would face “further consequences” as a response to Putin’s “special military operations” in Ukraine. In the statement issued Wednesday night, Biden had said that Putin had chosen a “premeditated war” that was sure to bring loss and human suffering to the Ukrainian people.

At the time of writing this report, air raid sirens were heard in Kyiv’s Maidan Square, as the capital had issued a stay-at-home order for non-essential workers.

The attack rattled the financial markets, sending U.S. stock futures tumbling and global oil prices spiking.
