Ban on gender-affirming care for transgender youth takes effect|Ted Eytan|CC BY-SA 4.0

Alabama’s recent bill that restricts gender-affirming treatment for transgender youth took effect on Sunday—30 days after Governor Kay Ivey signed the bill.

The restricted treatments include puberty-blocking medications and hormone therapy for transgender people under 18. Healthcare providers will have to face a prison sentence of 10 years if found guilty of providing treatment.

US District Judge Liles Burke and his staff are working on an order to impose a temporary halt on the legislation. They are currently drafting and will file an opinion on the healthcare ban within this week.

Judge Burke wrote, “The Court has made very substantial progress toward crafting an opinion in this matter and expects to file the opinion by the end of this week, if not sooner.”
