The Apple store in Cumberland Mall filed a petition for a union election on Wednesday, becoming the first Apple outlet in the country to opt to unionize.

If the election succeeds, the outlet will become the first-ever retail union in Apple Inc.

The union informed that more than 70% of the 100 plus employees in sales, technical, creative and operations roles are interested in organizing.

A spokesperson for the US National Labor Relations Board confirmed that they received Apple Store’s union petition on Wednesday—the election will be arranged if certain conditions are met.

The rise of unionization
Apple is not the first big company whose workers filed for union elections. Employees from various outlets of big corporations like Starbucks and Amazon have filed petitions for union elections.

The number of filed petitions has increased dramatically over the past few months. The National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) has received over 1,174 election requests from October 1, 2021, through March 31, 2022.

The world’s most valuable company’s response is awaited.
