Beijing recorded the highest number of COVID-19 cases in 18 months, ahead of the winter Olympics.

As of January 31, game organizers have reported 24 new COVID-19 cases among the athletes and personnel associated with the games. Out of these, 16 were athletes.

According to a notice on the Beijing 2022 official website, 18 of the cases were found among new airport arrivals and the rest six in the “closed-loop” bubble.

Nearly 60,000 people in the bubble are subject to daily testing. Any participants who test positive for COVID-19 is kept in isolation and can compete only after getting two negative PCR test results in 24 hours.

Beijing is about to become the first city to host both the Summer and the Winter Olympics, but China is having a hard time with the rising COVID-19 cases.
