President Joe Biden in his first State of the Union address issued a warning to Russian Premier Vladimir Putin, stating that ‘harsh punishment’ for his actions against Ukraine was on the cards. Biden, condemning the Russian leader’s declaration of war on Ukraine, added that the West was ‘united in its response’. Addressing a joint session of Congress at the Capitol, Biden’s first SOTU address also touched upon affairs closer to home, including his plans for leading Americans out of the economic slump and building a better nation. Biden’s speech received multiple standing ovations from both sides of the aisle, particularly on the issue of holding steadfast against the defunding of police departments.
It remains to be seen if Biden’s speech was just another typical chest-thump and promise-touting monologue seen at many SOTU addresses of the past.
