On Thursday, President Joe Biden asked Congress for $33 billion for Ukraine to help the country in its fight against Russia.
This latest proposal allocates $20 billion for the defense sector of Ukraine and US allies, $8.5 billion to the Ukrainian government to provide salaries and other services to the people, and $3 billion for global food and humanitarian programs and to help refugees who fled the country.
The White House predicts the package to last for five months, signaling a long-term commitment to support Kyiv.
The initial assistance package that Congress enacted last month was around $13.6 billion—half of the current proposal.
In addition, Biden requested $22 billion from lawmakers for taking measures to contain COVID-19.
