The CDC Director on Thursday signed off on Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 booster shots for children aged between five and 11.

CDC Director Dr Rochelle Walensky “endorsed” the votes of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP), allowing younger children to increase their protection against the Omicron variants.

The children under the age group can avail the booster shot five months after completing their second primary shot.

According to data from CDC, out of 28 million children in the age group, less than 30% received both primary shots. Walensky said, "Vaccination rates for children 5-11 in the US have lagged behind other age groups leaving them vulnerable to serious illness.”
