Col. Gail S. Halvorsen, a decorated U.S. airman dubbed the "Candy Bomber"—for his one-of-a-kind supply drops in Germany during the World War II—died at the age of 101 in Utah on Wednesday. Halvorsen gained fame, and his moniker, during the 15-month Berlin Airlift, when he met several German youngsters and promised to give them candy. According to the Berlin Airlift Historical Foundation, Halvorsen earned his nickname when he began dropping chocolates connected to tiny makeshift parachutes from his plane.
