The death toll, on Tuesday, reached 23 after heavy rainfall triggered a massive landslide in Ecuador's capital Quito—resulting in 47 injuries and nearly 20 people missing, Mayor Santiago Guarderas said on Tuesday.
The extreme rainfall triggered landslides on Monday on the slopes of the Pichincha volcano. Torrential rains build up a large amount of water in a gorge near La Gasca and La Comuna, sweeping over homes and sending mud and rocks. The heavy rainfall in Quito is equivalent to 75 liters per square meter, making it the highest rainfall recorded in the nearly last two decades.
