“It's really damaging to the songwriting industry,” Ed Sheeran tweeted after he won the copyright lawsuit filed by grime artist Sami Chokri and music producer Ross O’Donoghue in London
Sheeran won the legal battle of copyright claims over his 2017 mega-hit ‘Shape of You’.
Chokri and O’Donoghue claimed Sheeran had copied some elements from their 2015 song ‘Oh Why’ while composing his ‘Shape of You’.
After the trial, judge Antony Zacaroli announced that there was no evidence or proof that Sheeran started writing ‘Shape of You’ before October 2016.
Judge Zacaroli mentioned that Sheeran did not seem to rip off elements from ‘Oh Why’ stating, “While there are similarities between the 'OW (Oh Why) Hook' and the 'OI (Oh I) Phrase', there are also significant differences.”
“Lawsuits are not a pleasant experience and I hope that this ruling means in the future baseless claims like this can be avoided," the singer said.
