White House expects FDA decision on authorizing Moderna COVID-19 vaccine for kids under 5|Governor Tom Wolf|CC BY 2.0

The White House is expecting a decision from the US FDA on authorizing Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine for kids under five years within the next few weeks.

“Moderna has completed its application. Those data are being looked at very closely right now by FDA experts,” said Dr Ashish Jha, the White House COVID-19 response coordinator.

Notably, the country didn’t introduce COVID-19 vaccines for children below five since vaccines became available in 2020.

Why is it significant?

The shots would provide increased protection to children as the country is seeing a hike in COVID-19 Omicron variant cases, especially among children.
