Huge wildfires in the Florida Panhandle forced evacuation of more than 1,100 homes as well as veterans in a nursing home, Sunday, after three rapidly moving wildfires continued to resist containment efforts. The area is still recovering from a Category 5 hurricane three years ago.
Due to the dry conditions and high winds, the three fires combined have scorched more than 10,000 acres of land. Reports suggest that the Bertha Swamp Road fire had burned around 9,000 acres and was 10% contained as of Sunday afternoon, while the Adkins Avenue fire had burned more than 1,400 acres and was 35% contained.
The Forest Service tweeted about a third fire that had already covered more than 160 acres. The Star Avenue fire broke out in Bay County and was spreading rapidly.
