The Florida Senate on Tuesday passed the controversial “Parental Rights in Education” bill, nicknamed by critics as the “Don't Say Gay” bill. Passed by 22-17 votes, the bill prohibits “classroom discussion about sexual orientation or gender identity,” and applies to primary classes from kindergarten through the third grade.

Florida’s Republican-controlled Senate will now head to Governor Ron DeSantis, who had previously expressed his support for the bill, for his signature. DeSantis in a press conference on Monday said that under the law, parents can send their kids to kindergarten without worrying about these subjects influencing their kids’ school curriculum.

Once the bill gets approval from DeSantis, it is expected to take effect during the 2022-2023 school year.
