Vice President Kamala Harris on Tuesday addressed the overruling of Roe v. Wade as a “direct assault on freedom and fundamental rights.” A leaked draft from the Supreme court that would likely end legalizing abortions has stunned the nation and erupted disappointment among the public.
According to the opinion draft released by Politico, the majority of the Supreme Court is set to end Roe v. Wade rule—stating it was wrong.
“This is the time to fight for women and for our country with everything we have,” Vice President Harris, a Democrat, added.
The battleground
Abortion rights are a warfield for the US Senate, where the Democrats speak for Roe v. Wade and the Republicans fight against it.
Oklahoma and Texas are some of the recent Republican-led states to pass laws with the strictest rules to ban abortions after six weeks.
Democrats are having a hard time as they struggle to eliminate the abortion ban against the strong opposition and will likely try to gather at least one vote for a majority.
Five out of nine justices had initially voted to overturn Roe v. Wade rule.
The aftermath
If the Supreme Court overrules Roe v. Wade, as mentioned in the initial draft, millions of women would be affected, especially women with low income and women of color. The law, if passed, would give women little to zero chances of undergoing a legal abortion.
