The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) confirmed on Wednesday an outbreak of highly pathogenic avian flu in a commercial turkey flock in Dubois County, Indiana. It is the U.S. first case in a commercial poultry operation since 2020. The farm in Dubois County is home to more than 29,000 turkeys that are being culled due to the outbreak, said state officials. According to the USDA, no human cases of bird flu have been discovered in the U.S.

Outbreaks in domestic poultry will impact the U.S. farm sectors, which may lead to the risk of limiting imports from infected areas. China declared on Monday that it banned poultry imports from Spain and Moldova due to flu outbreaks. Meanwhile, Taiwan announced restrictions on meat and poultry products from Indiana—the USDA cited on its website. According to the officials, the said farms are under quarantine; they further stated that birds from infected flocks will not enter the food system. Officials have started testing birds in the surrounding areas.
