Pennsylvania’s Lieutenant Governor John Fetterman triumphed at the election for the Democratic Senate primary on Tuesday, days after having a stroke. Fetterman beat Rep. Conor Lamb and Rep. Malcolm Kenyatta in one of the Nation’s closely watched Senate Primary elections.
Fetterman’s victory came the same day he underwent a procedure to implant a pacemaker and defibrillator.
The candidate
John Fetterman was a front-runner in the Senate primary ever since the beginning of the campaign. He gained attention with his support of legalizing recreational marijuana and the increase of the national minimum wage to $15 per hour.
The competition to replace Senator Pat Toomey
Pennsylvania acts as a strategic playground for both parties this election. With two-term Republican Senator Pat Toomey retiring from politics this year, the Democrats have an opportunity to turn the tables in the evenly-split Senate.
Fetterman will compete against the winner of the Republican Primary in November’s midterm elections.
