A New York Judge held Donald Trump in contempt on Monday for failing to produce documents related to his business practice. The former President will have to shell out $10,000 a day until he complies with the subpoena.
Trump was not present in the courtroom when the contempt was announced.
The curious case of Donald Trump
Justice Arthur Engoron ruled that a contempt finding was appropriate because of what the judge called "repeated failures" to hand over materials.
Trump had earlier failed to quash a subpoena from State Attorney General Letitia James, who is investigating whether the Trump Organization provided false numbers of its real estate properties to obtain loans and tax deductions in their favor.
Notably, the former President did not attempt to produce the requested business documents during the investigation. The initial deadline to provide the said documents was before March 3, which was later extended to March 31.
Trump’s attorney Alina Habba stated they would likely appeal the civil contempt.
