Karine Jean-Pierre will become the first openly LGBTQ woman and Black person to serve as the White House press secretary.

The current press secretary, Jen Psaki, will be in the role until May 13, after which the current deputy press secretary will take up the mantle.

Jean-Pierre was nominated by President Joe Biden and has worked on his 2020 presidential campaign. She has also served in President Barack Obama's White House and was the chief public affairs officer for MoveOn.org.

"This is a historic moment, and it's not lost on me," Jean-Pierre said during a meet in the White House press room. "It is an honor and a privilege to be behind this podium."
