The state of Texas has filed a lawsuit against Facebook's parent company, Meta, alleging that the social media giant improperly stole facial recognition data of millions of state residents. The case, filed on Monday in Harrison County District Court, claims that a now-defunct Facebook photo-tagging function failed to get informed permission from Texans prior to collecting their face recognition data. Facebook had said in November 2021 that it would remove the feature, merely months after settling a historic class-action lawsuit in Illinois for $650 million over the same problem.
