The Minneapolis Federation of Teachers declared to go on a strike starting Tuesday, which is to continue until further notice.
This is the first Minneapolis teachers strike in more than 50 years.
Greta Callahan, President of the Minneapolis Federation of Teachers said on Monday, “We are going on strike tomorrow for safe and stable schools that our students deserve.”
The strike was called on following the alleged fruitless negotiation for increased wages, mental health support for students and smaller class capacities.
As the teachers demand for increased funding, the district says it is facing a budget shortage due to the decreased enrollment as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.
The decision by the federation will cancel classes of around 29,000 students in one of Minnesota's largest school districts.
