New York Governor Kathy Hochul, in a tweet released on Sunday, announced that school mask mandates in the city will be lifted on March 2nd in light of the steady decline in COVID cases. The announcement follows NYC Mayor Eric Adams’ recent statement that vaccine mandates for entry to public spaces like gyms, restaurants, and cinemas would be lifted on March 7th, provided the number of cases continues to fall. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention had recently updated their guidelines, stating that mask-wearing was only necessary for areas highly affected by COVID, while medical experts remain wary, warning that the decrease in Omicron cases should not be considered the end of the pandemic.
