World number one and six-time Wimbledon Champion Novak Djokovic called the Wimbledon ban of Russian and Belarusian players “crazy”.
Speaking at the Serbia Open on Wednesday, he said, “When politics interferes with sport, the result is not good."
ATP and WTA tours have criticized the All England Lawn Tennis Club's (AELTC) decision.
The move marks the first time players have been banned on the grounds of nationality since the immediate post-World War Two era that excluded German and Japanese players.
Djokovic, who grew up in war-torn Serbia, added that players had nothing to do with the ongoing war.
The ban affects top players like ATP No 2 Daniil Medvedev and WTA No 4 Aryna Sabalenka.
