The New York Times (NYT) tech staff walked off the job yesterday in a labor dispute that could disrupt Election Day coverage. The strike would affect key tools like “The Needle,” which provides real-time predictions of election outcomes.
The strike jeopardizes the media outlet’s ability to keep websites and apps running on a crucial day. Representing about 600 workers, the Times Tech Guild demands higher pay, stronger remote work protections, and job security.
If the strike continues into Election Day, it’ll mark the first NYT labor stoppage during a presidential election in 60 years.
The Guild, organized in 2022, urged readers to honor a “digital picket line” and avoid NYT’s Cooking app and games.
Management, meanwhile, has emphasized contingency plans to ensure coverage continuity and expressed disappointment in the union’s timing.
It also noted that the average compensation for tech union members, at $190,000, is among the highest in the company.
