Representatives of Arizona and Oklahoma passed bills on Thursday banning transgender youth from participating in girl’s sports.
The Republican-sponsored “Save Women’s Sports Act” if signed into law, would ban transgender female athletes from participating in school sports.
In addition, Arizona lawmakers passed legislation prohibiting physicians from providing gender-affirming surgery to minors.
Both the bills are now headed to the desk of Republican Governor Doug Ducey.
Supporters of these bans argue they need to ensure transgender youth do not have a one-sided advantage in girls’ sports.
Opponents of the bill find such measures discriminatory.
