Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt signed a bill on Tuesday that would make performing an abortion illegal except for medical emergencies, with a fine of up to $100,000 and/or up to ten years in prison for the providers.
Oklahoma’s abortion ban bill is one of the strictest abortion bans after Texas.
“We want to choose life in Oklahoma. We do not want to allow abortions in the state of Oklahoma,” Stitt said as the Republican Governor signed the bill.
The wrath of the abortion ban
Oklahoma was one of the few states with limited abortion restrictions—becoming a safe place for women for legal abortion. Following Texas’ six-week abortion ban, abortion providers in Oklahoma saw a rise of 2500% as the demand for the treatment increased.
If the abortion bill takes effect this summer, the women of the United States will have little to no right to legal abortion.
