Investigators suspect that a single individual may be responsible for a recent run of shootings in New York City and Washington, D.C. that targeted homeless people.
Police officials suspect that the perpetrator carried out five shootings in March alone, two of which turned deadly for the victims.
In a joint statement, DC and NYC Mayors said it was heartbreaking and tragic to know that a cold-blooded killer was on the loose and that they are “certain that we will get the suspect off the street and into police custody.”
While speaking to media personnel, New York Police Commissioner Keechant L. Sewell said, “We will use every tool, every technique, and every partner to bring the killer to justice.”
The news of the shootings forces authorities to take a closer look at the ever-recurring problem of homelessness in the US. Leaders and government administrators are now likely to address plaguing issues like providing homeless folk better infrastructure for shelter, food, and—as this story brings to light—a sense of security.
