Philadelphia’s Board of Health (BOH) announced the end of the mask mandate for indoor public spaces on Thursday, just days after the city reinstated the mask mandate.

Health officials explained that the abrupt reversal of the mandate was “Due to decreasing hospitalizations and a leveling of case counts.”

The journey of the mask mandate rule

Philadelphia initially dropped its mask mandate on March 2, following a decline in COVID-19 cases.

On April 11, the mask mandate came into effect again, with officials stating it was necessary to protect the public from a potential new wave by an omicron subvariant, BA.2.

The health department of Philadelphia had reported 82 COVID-19 cases as of Monday.

Information on when the mask mandate will be lifted and details to support the decision will be announced today.
