US federal prosecutors have accused Henry “Enrique” Tarrio, leader of the far-right Proud Boys organization, of conspiracy.
The charges are in connection with his alleged participation in the January 6 assault on the US Capitol building in 2021.
Tarrio is one of the 775 persons charged with crimes in connection with the assault by supporters of then-President Donald Trump. He was charged with conspiracy to “obstruct an official proceeding.” The charge was also levied against a number of Capitol rioters and carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in jail if convicted.
Tarrio’s criminal record precedes himself—he was arrested for vandalizing a Black Lives Matter banner during a December 2020 demonstration in Washington, DC.
