Russian state-funded news organization RT America is putting a halt to its broadcasts as tensions between the US and Russia over Russia's invasion of Ukraine continue to grow. According to reports, roughly 120 of RT’s American employees received severance payouts and were notified of the shutdown on Thursday. The announcement was made during a meeting, stating that the network's Washington DC headquarters, as well as it's New York, Los Angeles, and Miami bureaus, would cease operations.
The news comes on the heels of DirecTV's announcement that it was dropping RT America from its programming stating, “in accordance with our previous agreement with RT America, we are accelerating this year's contract expiration timeline and will cease offering their programming effective immediately.” Music and podcast streaming service Spotify has also deleted podcasts associated with RT from its platform.
