With the ongoing invasion of Ukraine still haunting the world, Russia posed a new dangerous threat to Finland and Sweden if the two Nordic countries were to join NATO.
Dmitry Medvedev, deputy chairman of the Russian Security Council—via his official Telegram channel—said there would no longer be a nuclear-free Baltic if Finland and Sweden were to join NATO.
The former Russian President insisted Russia would have to strengthen its military forces in the Baltic Sea if the European countries joined the US-led intergovernmental military alliance.
Reason for Russia’s threat
Russia has the world’s largest arsenal of nuclear warheads, and a threat to the two Nordic nations cannot be taken lightly—considering the Ukraine invasion.
Finland shares an 830-mile border with Russia, and its alliance with NATO would be a problem for the country.
Sweden would likely follow Finland’s decision in joining the organization.
According to Medvedev, the move would pose a bigger threat for Russia as it would have “more registered opponents.”
