The Senate approved a bill to finance the government in the short term, delivering it to President Joe Biden's desk hours before the shutdown deadline. The legislation, which was approved by a vote of 65 to 27, will fund the government through March 11. Congress has until Friday to adopt a funding deal. Legislators aim to buy themselves enough time to approve legislation funding federal operations until September 30.

Apart from absence of some federal workers,  government shutdowns can also lead to suspension of certain services hampering the economy.

Since September, 2021, the Congress has managed to keep the lights on through several stopgap measures.
