The surface of the moon is poised to take a direct hit from three tonnes of space trash in a case of unprecedented cosmic littering that will carve out a crater large enough to accommodate several semi-trailers. The piece of debris—an exhausted rocket booster believed to have been part of China's Chang'e 5-T1 mission that orbited the moon in 2014—is expected to collide with the Hertzsprung crater around 12.25 PM GMT. Chinese authorities, however, are skeptical that the debris is theirs, stating that the top stage from the Chang’e mission reentered and burnt up in the Earth’s atmosphere.
