Texas Gov. Greg Abbott excludes gun control and requests ‘firearm safety’ committee post Uvalde shooting|Gage Skidmore|CC BY-SA 2.0

Texas Governor Greg Abbott Wednesday sent a letter to state lawmakers, requesting a special committee to take “meaningful action” following last week’s mass shooting at Robb Elementary School that killed 19 children and two adults.

However, the joint letter to Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick and House Speaker Dade Phelan does not mention gun control. It requests state leaders to hold a special session to discuss ways to “prevent future school shootings”.

The special session
The Texas Governor, in his letter, mentioned that the committee should focus and take measures on factors like school safety, mental health, social media, police training and firearm safety.

The criticism
Former US Rep Beto O’Rourke, took to Twitter criticizing Governor Abbott’s request, saying, “Anyone can call for a committee. Only a governor can call a special session. Do your job.”
