The UN’s special weather agency, World Meteorological Organization, confirmed that the US received two record-breaking lightning in 2022; both in length and duration. The first record was set on April 29, 2020, when a single ‘Megaflash’ covered 477.2 miles across Louisiana, Texas, and Mississippi (The length between NYC to Ohio). The record for the longest duration was awarded to the 17-second Megaflash that occurred across Uruguay and Argentina during a rainstorm on June 18, 2020. Lightning strikes are the major cause of deaths in the US during storms.
