Ukrainian civilians have been asked by officials to stay in bomb shelters on Monday over concerns that Russian attacks would intensify as Moscow celebrates Victory Day.

Putin and the Victory Day celebrations

Presiding over a display of Russia’s fierce firepower on the 77th Victory Day, President Vladimir Putin told his troops that they were fighting for their country’s security now.

Putin acknowledged the loss of Russian soldiers during the invasion and urged his army towards victory.

Ukrainian school bombing

Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky on Sunday condemned Russian troops for shelling a school in Eastern Ukraine.

Zelensky confirmed that 60 people were killed in the school bombing—about 90 people had taken refuge in the school.

Moscow did not respond to Kyiv’s accusations.

New sanctions ahead of Victory Day

The US is determined to see Russia back away from its invasion of Ukraine as the government imposed a new set of sanctions.

The US set its eyes on Kremlin-based TV stations Channel One Russia, Russia-1 and NTV, and cut off their services.

Executives from Russia’s Sberbank and Gazprombank were also sanctioned by the government.
