Russia’s war to “demilitarize and denazify” Ukraine reaches its 100th day Friday.
After the unsuccessful attempts to capture Kyiv, the Russian troops have now turned their attention to the East and South. British intelligence officials said the Kremlin has conquered most of Severodonetsk, the last remaining major city in the Luhansk region of Donbas under Ukraine's control.
The waning attention
As Ukraine hits the 100th day of Russian invasion, there is significantly less attention from the world than it had during the beginning of the invasion.
According to NewsWhip data exclusively provided to Axios, war-related interaction on social media platforms decreased from 109 million to 4.8 million.
According to the same data, during the last six weeks, users expressed 6x more interest in the Depp-Heard defamation case than the war in Ukraine.
Ukraine: Loss and refugee
According to the United Nations refugee committee UNHCR, during the one hundred days of the war in Ukraine, over 6.8 million civilians were forced to move out and seek refuge in neighboring countries.
The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights said Wednesday that 4,149 Ukrainian civilians were killed, and almost 5,000 were injured in the war - noting that the actual numbers are likely much higher.
Setbacks for Russia
The war has brought sanctions and NATO membership applications from Finland and Sweden, affecting the Kremlin’s economic and geographical power over other countries.
Russia is receiving heavy criticism and pressure from several countries to drop the invasion. The EU had recently imposed an oil embargo that would cut off 90% of the Russian oil supply by the end of the year.
The US had agreed to send advanced rocket systems as a part of the $700 million military aid package to Ukraine.
