As fighting rages in the east and south of Ukraine, the country will conduct its first trial against a captured Russian serviceman who will stand trial on war crimes.

Ukraine’s Prosecutor General Iryna Venediktova said Wednesday her office has officially charged Sgt. Vadin Shyshimarin, 21, a Russian soldier, for killing an unarmed civilian.

Sgt. Shyshimarin will stand trial for killing a 62-year-old unarmed civilian riding a bicycle on February 28, four days into the war.

Prosecutor Venediktova’s office informed that it has been investigating over 10,700 war crimes against Russia and has identified around 600 suspects from the Kremlin forces.

The date of trial for the captured soldier Shyshimarin is not announced yet, but Venediktova is convinced that he would receive up to 15 years of prison.
