The strategically positioned city of Kherson in Ukraine—a key strategic point along the Black Sea—has been ‘taken over’ by Russian forces, as indicated by the mayor of the city and various reports coming in. With a populace of nearly 300,000, Kherson’s Mayor Ihor Kolykhaiev in a Facebook post said that the city’s inhabitants must now adhere to the instructions of “armed people who came to the city’s administration”. If the reports are to be believed, this makes Kherson the first major Ukrainian city to fall under Russian control since the invasion began on February 24th.
