The U.S. added China’s Tencent and Alibaba Group E-commerce sites to the “notorious markets” list for allegedly selling or permitting the sale of counterfeit goods, the U.S. Trade Representative’s office confirmed on Thursday. The list includes 42 online marketplaces and 35 physical marketplaces that have been accused of engaging in or facilitating significant trademark counterfeiting or copyright theft. Inclusion on the list is detrimental to the firms’ reputation but bears no direct penalties.
