The school representatives in Kenosha, Wisconsin, publicly released surveillance footage showing Shawn Guetschow—an off-duty police officer—kneeling on the neck of a girl, aged 12, after a school fight.
The police officer, who is still employed, is under examination, the city’s police department said in a statement.
The March 4 incident that occurred in Lincoln Middle School has been attracting people’s attention. In the video, Guetschow interrupted the fight by pushing the girl’s head on the floor and placed his knee on her neck for a few seconds before handcuffing her.
The girl’s father, Jerrel Perez, has called for criminal charges against Guetschow for using a type of restraint that was banned for Wisconsin law enforcement officers last year.
This incident is a grim reminder of the death of George Floyd in 2020 by Derek Chauvin, who was convicted of Floyd’s murder and imprisoned for twenty-two and half years.
