As the World Health Organization is trying to prevent the spread of infectious diseases in Ukraine, it shared its concerns Sunday regarding the ongoing war, and how it is likely to increase COVID-19 transmission, reports CNN.
Though the number of cases have come down in Ukraine compared to the previous week, the country may face severe infections and deaths due to the low vaccination rate in the country.
Adding to the WHO’s worry are the unknown numbers of the infected out of the more than 2 million people who have fled the country to surrounding areas, regions also with lower vaccination rates.
According to Our World In Data, Ukraine’s COVID-19 rate is about 34% while the neighboring country Moldova reported 29%.
Between March 3 and 9, there have been 791,021 new cases and 8,012 deaths, as cited in a WHO situation report published Sunday.
Maria Van Kerkhove, WHO's the technical lead on COVID-19 stated in Wednesday's briefing, the virus will find possibilities to grow.
