The ‘Shot Sage Blue Marilyn’, Andy Warhol's famous 1964 silk-screen portrait of American sensation Marilyn Monroe sold at Christie’s on Monday for approximately $195 million.
With the ongoing financial inflation and increase in interest rates, it is surprising to see the steady popularity of these art pieces.
The Pinnacle of American Pop
Setting an auction record for any modern painting, the ‘Shot Sage Blue Marilyn’ is one in a series of portraits of Monroe following her death in 1962. The silk-screen portrait has become one of the best-known pop-art works ever since.
The portrait was sold for a little above $195 million to Larry Gagosian, the same art dealer who previously sold the piece to its current owners, Thomas and Doris Ammann back in 1986.
The ‘Shot Sage Blue Marilyn’ broke the previous record by a 1982 painting by Jean-Michel Basquiat, which sold for $110.5 million in 2017.
