A slew of restaurants and ride-share companies are offering freebies to encourage voting on Election Day.
Krispy Kreme will be handing out a free original glazed doughnut and “I Voted” stickers (no proof needed), while Johnny Rockets will offer free milkshakes with any purchase for those who show their sticker.
Ikea shoppers can snag a free frozen yogurt with a coupon, and Lazy Dog diners will get a free drink with an entree and sticker.
Lime and Lyft will offer discounts on rides to the polls—Lime has a free ride code “VOTE2024,” and Lyft is offering half off with “VOTE24.”
While it is illegal under federal election law to provide incentives to vote, it becomes legal when open to everyone during voting day, as it’s similar to any freebies or discounts on other days.
Of the 244 million voting-eligible Americans, 161 million are expected to cast their ballots in 2024.
It could be another record turnout year. The Federal Election Commission reports that 158,429,631 people voted in the 2020 presidential election, the highest since 1990, according to Forbes.
