The move follows months of controversy and internal pressure to oust David Richardson|DHS.gov

David Richardson, the acting chief of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), resigned on Monday, just six months into the job.

His departure comes after months of controversy and internal pressure to oust him. Richardson was appointed by Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Kristi Noem, despite having no prior experience in disaster management.

His tenure was marked by a crisis in July when catastrophic Texas floods killed more than 130 people. Richardson was on vacation at that time and was reportedly unreachable for hours, and absent from the flood zone for more than a week.

Newly named FEMA chief of staff, Karen Evans, will take over on December 1.
