President Donald Trump removed acting Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Commissioner Gary Shapley on Friday, only three days after his appointment, reports The New York Times.

Deputy Treasury Secretary Michael Faulkender now replaces him, continuing a wave of rapid leadership changes at the tax agency.

The move follows internal tensions between Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Elon Musk, who reportedly influenced Shapley’s appointment.

The IRS also revoked access for Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) service official Gavin Kliger, who was managing major layoffs.

The shake-up comes as the administration considers targeting nonprofits like Harvard over political disagreements, raising concerns of IRS politicization.
